How Do You Get a Replacement Casting for Obsolete Farm Equipment When the Part Is Discontinued?

If a cast gear case, pulley, hub, bracket, or housing on an old tractor or implement has failed and the OEM no longer makes it, you do not need the original drawings. The short answer

A discontinued cast part can be replaced from a sample, with no original drawings. The route is reverse-engineering (3D scan to a CAD digital twin) followed by patternless sand casting — a 3D-printed sand mold poured directly from the CAD, with no pattern to build — in the alloy you specify. Lead time for a one-off agricultural part is typically 3–5 weeks instead of the 14–22 weeks of the traditional pattern-plus-pour path. You supply the part and the grade; we replicate the geometry and pour to your spec.

Why “the part doesn’t exist anymore” is no longer the end of the road

Agricultural castings have a long service life and a long tail of obsolescence. Equipment outlives its manufacturer’s parts catalog by decades, and when a cast gear housing or flywheel finally cracks, the OEM is often gone, merged, or simply no longer tooled for it. Historically that meant a foundry needed a pattern, and a pattern needed a fully-dimensioned drawing — neither of which exists for a 40-year-old implement.

Today the worn part itself is the source of truth. Typical agricultural parts we pour from a sample

  • Gear cases and transmission housings — gray or ductile iron, with bores and faces machined to fit existing shafts and bearings.
  • Flywheels, pulleys, and sheaves — often gray iron; balanced when the application requires it.
  • Brackets, mounts, and support arms — ductile iron or steel where shock and structural loads matter.
  • Hubs, spindles, and axle components — ductile iron or cast steel to your grade.

You specify the alloy — we pour to it

One Off Castings is a foundry, not a material-selection consultancy. The alloy and grade are determined by you or your engineer; we reverse-engineer the geometry and pour to that given specification. If the original part’s metallurgy is unknown, your engineer determines the correct replacement grade — we do not select or certify the material on your behalf. The grades we most often pour for agricultural work:

  • ASTM A48 gray iron (Class 30 / 35 / 40) — housings, gear cases, flywheels, pulleys, and covers; excellent damping and machinability.
  • ASTM A536 ductile iron (e.g., 65-45-12) — brackets, hubs, and load-bearing parts where ductility and higher strength matter.
  • ASTM A27 / A148 cast steel — high-strength structural and impact-loaded components.
  • ASTM B26 / B108 aluminum (e.g., A356) — lighter housings, covers, and manifolds.

Realistic lead time, end-to-end

Published industry guidance puts standard iron- and steel-casting lead times in the 8–12 week range once tooling exists, with current US capacity often pushing the queue further out (CastingSource: lead times in the foundry industry). Add another 6–10 weeks on the front end if a new pattern is required. The patternless route removes the pattern step entirely. A typical short-run agricultural part runs:

  1. Days 1–4. 3D-scan the worn or broken part. Rebuild the digital twin in CAD: restore worn gear teeth or faces, repair fractured features, confirm bolt circles, bores, and shaft fits against the as-found geometry.
  2. Days 4–8. Solidification simulation in MAGMA / NovaCast to find hot spots, shrink risk, and feed paths before any metal moves. See solidification engineering.
  3. Days 8–18. 3D-printed sand mold built and metal poured to your specified ASTM grade, with any required heat treatment.
  4. Days 18–28. CNC machining of bores, faces, keyways, and mounting holes to your dimensions on our in-house equipment. See CNC machining.

Tolerances and fit

As-cast surfaces hold general linear tolerances per ISO 8062-3 (typically grade DCTG 10–12 for parts in this size class) — fine for the outside of a housing or the web of a pulley. The features that have to fit the existing machine — bearing bores, shaft fits, keyways, bolt circles, and mating faces — are CNC-machined to your dimensions so the replacement bolts straight in. Tell us which features are interface-critical and we hold those to print.

What to send us to get a quote moving

  • The part: the worn or broken casting, including any fragments. The physical part is far better than photos, but photos are useful for a first look.
  • Material: the ASTM grade or alloy you want poured. If the original alloy is unknown, have your engineer determine the correct grade — we pour to the spec you provide.
  • Interface geometry: shaft diameters, bearing bores, bolt circles, and any dimension that must match the existing assembly. Calling these out up front speeds the quote.
  • Quantity: one is normal here; tell us if repeat orders are likely.
  • Acceptance: any required NDE, inspection, or documentation.
  • Schedule: when you actually need it — downtime jobs are flagged and run hot.

FAQ

Can you cast a replacement part for old farm equipment when the part is discontinued and there are no drawings?

Yes. If you can send the worn or broken part — or even both halves of a cracked one — we 3D-scan it, rebuild a CAD digital twin of the geometry, and pour a replacement from a 3D-printed sand mold with no pattern tooling. The original drawing is helpful but not required. You (or your engineer) tell us the alloy/grade to pour, or supply the part with your material spec; we reverse-engineer the geometry and pour to that given spec.

Is there a minimum order? I only need one part.

No minimum. One Off Castings exists for exactly this — a single replacement gear case, pulley, bracket, or housing. The patternless sand-printing route removes pattern tooling, which is what normally makes a quantity of one uneconomical at a traditional foundry.

What metals do you pour for agricultural castings?

We pour gray iron (ASTM A48), ductile iron (ASTM A536), carbon and low-alloy steel (ASTM A27 / A148), stainless, and aluminum (e.g., A356 per ASTM B26/B108). You specify the grade; if the original part’s alloy is unknown, your engineer determines the correct grade and we pour to it.

What if I only have one broken half, or the part is badly worn?

Still workable. CAD reconstruction rebuilds missing or worn material using unworn reference surfaces and symmetry on the same part — a cracked flywheel, a snapped bracket arm, or a gear case with one corroded boss can usually be rebuilt into a complete digital model. Send everything you have, including any fragments.

How long does a replacement casting take?

Many one-off agricultural parts run 3–5 weeks end-to-end — scan, CAD, simulation, 3D-printed sand mold, pour, machining, and inspection — versus the 14–22 weeks of the traditional build-a-pattern-then-pour path. Larger or more complex parts push the longer end.
